About the Jack Russell Terrier
Jack Russells are a small terrier whose origins were in fox hunting. Their name "Jack Russell" has been used for all types of Russell Terriers but is mostly used for working terriers. Until 2003 the Parson Russell Terrier was known as Jack in the US.

Jack Russell Terriers are very intelligent, and have high energy. Because they are small, friendly and inquisitive they are very popular pets. They do need consistent training and lots of attention or they have a tendency to dig both in the house and out. Although this dog mingles easily with children, they don't tolerate even unintentional abuse. Usually they are outgoing and very friendly towards other dogs but some show same-sex aggression issues. A Jack can live for over 15 years if they are well cared for.

This dog was bred by Reverand Mr John Russell, a parson and hunting enthusiast born in 1795. He wanted a terrier with high stamina for the hunt with courag and the ability to chase out foxes that had gone to the ground. The Second World War had an impact on the breed. People didn't need sporting dogs and the working Jacks were greatly reduced. They then became family dogs. England Kennel Club recently re-opened its registry to allow inclusion of some Jack Russell Terriers under the Parson Russell name. Over the years there has been a lot of controversy of the breed. Any number of articles will explain this.
