About the German Shepherd Dog
The German Shepherd Dog, known also as the Alsatian or Schäfer is an intelligent breed of dog This breed is easy to train in obedience and protection. They are often used as working dogs such as search and rescue, military police and guard dogs. They are also used as assistance/service dogs such as guide dogs. German Shepherds are large, strong and very handsome looking dogs.

Well bred German Shepherds have powerful jaws, strong teeth, a strong sense of loyalty and obedience. Dogs from the working lines have very high energy and make great pets but need daily exercise. North American lines have a more stable temperment ideal for companship. These make excellent pets. They have general good health but prone to elbow and hip dysplasia.

They were originated by Captain Max von Stephanitz in the late 19th century. After WW I, British and American soldiers, impressed by the dogs abilities brought some home to breed. They immediately became very popular as a family pet and a working dog. They are considered one of the most intelligent and versatile breeds in existance.
