About the Dachshund The Dachshund is a short-legged, elongated dog breed of the hound family. The breed's name is German and literally means "badger dog" . This dog was developed to scent, chase, hunt and kill badgers and other animals that dwell in holes. They are sometimes referred to as wiener dogs or sausage dogs. Even though their name Dachshund is German, they are referred to as Dackel or Teckel in Germany. These dogs are loyal, playful and very fun dogs. They are also clever, lively and courageous. They can have spinal problems and their owners need to be sure they don't become obese. It is not good for them to jump alot or take stairs. Supposidly their early roots go back to Ancient Egypt where engravings of a look alike dog have been found. In its modern incarnation they are the creation of European breeders. Dachshunds have been viewed as a symbol of Germany. They are known for this association when one was the first official mascot for the 1972 Summer Olympics. The Dachshund is a popular pet in the US and is close to the fifth most common dog breed over the last 10 years. They are great for apartment dwellers and are in competition with the poodle as the most common breed in New York City in recent years. Advertise your site or business here..
