About the Cocker Spaniel There are two breeds of Cocker Spaniels - American Cocker Spaniel and English Cocker Spaniel. The American Cocker Spaniel. The American Cocker Spaniel evolved in the United States from spaniels imported from Great Britain. By the 1930s the American variety became so different from its English ancestors that it was given separate breed status. Spaniels can be susceptibleto infections in the ears, sometimes eyes. Common problems are progressive retinal atrophy, glaucoma and cataracts. Their name cocker comes from when the breed first hunted woodcock. The US registered the dog under the name Cocker Spaniel.
