About the Basset Hound
The Basset Hound is a chunky, short-legged breed of dog of the hound family. They are bred to hunt by scent, thus the title of scent hounds. Their sense of smell for tracking is second only to that of the Bloodhound. They are a very calm and companionable breed of dog. However they can be stubborn.

This dog is loyal, friendly and loves to play with children. You need to watch that they do not overeat, as they would rather eat and sleep than exercise. Basset Hounds are hard to train, will usually only obey commands if you offer a treat and can be very difficult to housebreak. They will howl or bay rather than bark when they think something is wrong. This breed of dog is an aristocratic breed of French lineage.

They were originally used to hunt rabbits and hare and have been traced to an illustrated text on hunting written in 1585. It is thought that Marquis de Lafayette brought Basset Hounds to the United States as a gift to George Washington. The American Kennel Club first recognized Basset Hounds as a breed in 1885. They are a healthy breed but can be prone to bloat, glaucoma, luxating patella and ectropion. Bassets will shed a lot and require frequent brushing. They also tend to drool. You will need to clean their ears regularly.

Basset Hounds have many prominent roles in movies, television and advertising.
