About the Anatolian Shepherd
The Anatolian Shepherd Dog is an ancient breed of dog developed in Anatolia (central Turkey). They are used for guarding flocks of sheep from wolves, bears, and jackals. The dog was developed to be independent and forceful when guarding its master's sheep. Because of these traits owners of dogs of this breed need to socialize them.They are very intelligent and learn quickly but might no obey. They can become very protective of any other animals in the family and will treat them as herd. They like and digest a diet of lamb and rice instead of the usual processed dog food. They live a long life,usually 11 years, which is more than other giant breeds of dogs.

The breed probably migrated to what is now Turkey about 1000 AD even though dogs similar to this were in existance at least 6000 years ago in Mesopotamia. Over time variations developed. In 1970, breeders focused on specific regions and worked on developing a standard breed for each region, thus the Anatolian is one of those from central Turkey.
