About the American Water Spaniel The American Water Spaniel is a gundog breed that is barely known about outside North America. They originated around the mid 1800s but the real origin is unknown. Some think they were developed in the Fox River and Wolf River valleys of Wisconsin. The AWS was developed as a hunting dog. Hunters needed a dog that could function on land and in the marsh. They were finally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1940. These dogs can flush animals as well as retrieve. They are a happy, really fine companion animal and can live in cramped quarters.
