About the Alaskan Malamutes
The Alaskan Malamute is a large dog breed known as a northern dog breed and was originally devreloped as a sleddog. Even as a sleddog they are for recreational mushing. Most of them are used as family pets and show dogs rather than a working dog. They are unable to compete in races against smaller, faster breeds.

Even tho they do bark like other dogs, a Malamute usually tends to "talk" by making a "woo woo" sound. They howl like a wolf or coyote when they are excited, sad or lonely. They tend to be like life in an aboriginal Arctic village would be. They think and act independently to protect the sled team. They are great in Arctic trail conditions that are hazardous and unpredictable. They are usually very affectionate to members of their own pack - human and dog members alike. The Malamute's gregariousness and tendency to openly give affection make them highly attractive to dog owners.

Harsh conditions for which Malamutes were bred rewarded a strong prey drive, as food was occasionally scarce. Consequently, Malamutes may instinctively attack animals such as house cats, squirrels, rabbits, chickens, quail, and even deer. They are known to be diggers and will dig madly in pursuit of a mouse, mole or gopher. They will also dig to escape a fenced in yard and will even dig a tunnel underneath houses.

They can have hip dysplasia, inherited polyneuropathy, chrondo dysplasia, and the usual northern breed eye problems.

The Malamute dog has had a distinguished history; aiding Admiral Richard Byrd to the South Pole, and the miners who came to Alaska during the Gold Rush of 1896 They were frequently crossbred with imported breeds. This genetic dilution seems to have had no long standing effect on the modern Malamute, and recent DNA analysis shows that Malamutes are one of the oldest breeds of dog, genetically distinct from other dog breeds. This dog was never destined to be a racing sled dog; instead, it was used for heavy freighting, pulling thousands of pounds of supplies to villages and camps.
